Michael Montoya –
I ordered the RYOBI ONE+ 18V Cordless Multi-Tool (Tool Only) after my neighbor saved me during a project in my home. I was installing a wall safe in my bedroom closet. The safe required two studs of standard 16 inch spacing for mounting. ed 16” (+ 1.5 in) to mount the 50 Lb. safe to. Our closet angles at 45 degrees to share the support studs with the front hall wall, so I anticipated the possibility of interference with how the builders interfaced the 2×4’s with the bend in the wall and backed off a considerable distance. I used a stud finder to confirm both the position of the studs I was to use as well as their width. I proceeded to cut a hole in the drywall with my Ryobi reciprocating saw. Once I had removed the rectangular section of the drywall, I discovered that the builders had tied in one of the 2×4’s to the hall wall at a 990 degree angle impeding the safe’s insertion between the two studs I had planned. My neighbor is more experienced and home modifications than me so I asked him his advice. He determined that the added 2×4 wasn’t load bearing. We quickly discovered that the reciprocating saw couldn’t be positioned in the space to make a clean cut. I was contemplating the use of a hand saw, which would have taken a half day, or perhaps an angle grinder which could have fit but was inappropriate and perhaps dangerous. He suggested he get his multi-tool which did the trick and was surprisingly quick. His multi-tool was a different brand and was corded. The tight space made the cord a bit cumbersome, but the tool was effective. Since I own eight other Ryobi ONE+ tools I decided then and there I would be getting the Ryobi cordless multi-tool. I just needed the tool-only version as I have plenty of batteries already. In arrived well packed and ready to use. So far, I have tested the saw function and have used the sanding function on an existing project. It works nearly as well as the corded version as a saw without having to tend to the cord. The corded version has more amps and can therefore cut more rapidly than the Ryobi, however, the corded version handled a 2×4 with ease in a reasonable amount of time. The sanding function gets into corners way better that my corded oscillating sander with a point on it. IIt handled the corners and joints on 9 steps in a renovation project quickly and effectively without a cord to worry about. 18V battery compatibility with my growing Ryobi collection, operation unencumbered by a cord, and versatile with a wide variety of multi-tool attachments; I am happy to make a place for this flexible tool in my shop!
