Excellent saw horses combines the best of both worlds. Let’s face it, site built saw horses are great for their customizability and practicality, store bought saw horses generally rule for portability and pack ability, oh and did I mention weight. While it doesn’t seem like a major stroke, adding the 2×4 changes everything. Painting trim, doors, etc? Run some screws into the 2 x 4 to elevate the painted surface…paining more than one door, or a bunch of trim? Screw a longer 2×4 or rip a 2×6 in half and screw it to the 2×4…now you have 8 to 10 feet of length to rest your painted boards on (while not necessary I do drop some legs like out riggers to keep anything from tipping). Working by yourself? You can add a jig to the 2×4, nail in a shallow “U-shape” to trap boards or pipe and prevent/reduce movement, need a plan table rip a couple of boards on a gentle slope, attach to 2×4 and then top with plywood…the uses are endless and what’s more with the leveling feet you have a stable platform. Think about trying to make a homemade saw horse with leveling feet. While it wouldn’t be difficult, it would add time and weight. Btw, the single best thing about this saw horse? After getting painted, sliced up, or full of holes, unbolt the 2×4, cut a new one, bolt it back – you have a new surface.
